Is the detour worth it?
Is the cheaper petrol station a bit further away? Here you can see whether the saving pays for the extra kilometres.
Enter both prices
Time and wear and tear are not included – with small savings the trip often is not worth it for that reason alone.
How the detour calculator works
Saving = fill-up amount × price difference between the two stations.
Cost of the detour = extra kilometres × consumption ÷ 100 × price at the cheaper station – because that is where you fill up the fuel for the detour.
If the saving is larger than the cost of the detour, the trip is worth it. “Worth it up to” shows how many extra kilometres the saving just about pays for. Your browser does all the calculating; nothing is transmitted.
Questions about the detour calculator
How many cents of difference make a detour worthwhile?
That depends on the fill-up amount and consumption. An example: at 6.5 litres per 100 km, every kilometre of detour uses 0.065 litres. If you fill 40 litres at 5 cents less per litre, you save €2 – depending on the price per litre, that covers roughly 15 to 18 kilometres of detour there and back. With a 2 cent difference it is only 6 to 7 kilometres.
Do I enter the whole journey or just the detour?
Only the extra kilometres, there and back combined. If the cheaper station is 3 kilometres off your route, that makes a 6 kilometre detour.
What does the detour calculator not take into account?
Your time, wear and tear and traffic jams. With small savings, the trip is therefore often not worth it even if the calculation is only just in the black.
Where do I find the stations' prices?
Every city page lists all petrol stations with their current prices. In the nearby search you can also sort by total cost – then the fuel for getting there is already included.
